Celebrating 62nd Independence Day - 2010 February 04
A Licensed specialized Bank established in Sri Lanka on 1st January,1999 under Regional Development Banks Act. No.06 of 1997 by amalgamating Kalutara, Kegalle & Ratnapura Regional Rural Development Banks. During the year ended December 31, 2003 the Bank has expanded its business activities and opened a branch in the Colombo District. The operational area of the bank now covers the districts of Ratnapura, Kegalle, Kalutara and Colombo with a network of 50 branches & 5 Banking Service Centers.

  There is a large number of customers who have grown with the bank. Entrepreneurs who have started small with the Bank has grown to be medium or large ones. Such numbers are also considerable. With the growth & expansion though they need commercial banking facilities they have not broken the links with the bank. They are our valued assets. Therefore the bank has plans to appraise their growth and in appreciation of their achievements give them recognition in the community. On the tenth anniversary of the SDB, the bank will recognize the best among them and give awards of appreciation & recognition.

Financial Position

The Sabaragamuwa Development Bank (SDB) was incorporated on 1st January 1999 under the RDB Act No 6 of 1997.The three Regional Rural Development Banks(RRDBs) of Ratnapura, Kegalle and Kalutara were amalgamated to form the SDB. Later Colombo District was added by the Central Bank of Sri Lanka at the request of the Govt. Since then four branches have been opened in the Colombo District. Since incorporation of the SDB new branches have been opened in areas where development banking services are required for rural economic development. The number of branches and extension offices stand at 55 as at date.

The SDB established with the objective of providing banking facilities to encourage thrift among the population and help the people of the operating are to enhance their income by expanding existing economic activities and embarking on new ventures. The bank helps its customers and the people in general to identify opportunities in their local environment for using their skills to income earning activities. In this process the bank helps them when necessary by assisting in developing their skills. Business management and entrepreneurial development are focused in the programmes conducted.

The SDB has witnessed Asset growth from Rs:754.0Mn to Rs:6000.0Mn during a ten year period. The customer base too has increased by many folds and today around 300,000 regular customers are patronizing the branch network.

The Bank mobilizes the savings in the area in which it operates and relends the money so collected in the same area for developmental activities thereby fulfilling its main objective.

The Bank has many products for it’s Savings Customers, adults, women and children. It also has attractive time deposit schemes to suit investors looking for interest income. Similarly it has a diversified range of loan products to meet the needs of the customers.

ENGLISH SPEAKING CIRCLE.

The SDB established the Sabaragamuwa Institute of English (SIEN) in order to popularize the learning of English. About 30 Teachers were trained with the help of Instructors trained by the Asia Foundation. The Teacher Trainees were assisted with opening up Teaching Centers.
As facilities for learning English is now freely available English Speaking Circles are being formed to encourage English Language Usage in day to day activities.
